Interactive AnalysisInformatica: Traditional BI Alone Doesn’t Cut it AnymoreInformatica: Traditional BI Alone Doesn’t Cut it Anymore
Best Practices and Solution Approaches for Enabling Faster Actionable Insights. The Business Intelligence (BI) landscape is shifting significantly. We are seeing a growing need for business self-service and agile BI, and enterprises are looking for ways to detect and respond quickly and proactively to competitive threats, operational issues, customer demands, and changes in regulations. Traditional BI approaches are, at best, after-the-fact, posing several key challenges to taking effective decisions and acting on them. To achieve the new levels of agility that business is demanding nowadays, enterprises need fast and trusted access to all information regardless of volume or variety, ready access to the most current data in operational systems, and real-time insight into business events as they happen. A data integration strategy that complements and enhances the newer self-service based BI architectures with real-time operational intelligence is becoming mandatory. In this presentation and demo, Tableau and Informatica will use customer examples to discuss:*Challenges with traditional BI *Best practices for delivering faster actionable insights *Solution approaches for enabling real-time operational intelligence.

Tableau PresentationTransparency at a University: Using Tableau to Develop an Accountability Website at Texas A&MTransparency at a University: Using Tableau to Develop an Accountability Website at Texas A&M
Texas A&M uses Tableau for their University Accountability Website. Because the website is for reporting (rather than analysis) and is for the public, Meredith’s team tries to keep the interfaces simple and the tooltips helpful. To aid interpretation, they use parameters, dashboard actions and multiple quick filters.
In creating the website, the team took a fresh look at the data to decide what kind of story they want to tell (comparisons between colleges/departments, geographic distributions of students/graduates, trends, etc.). Even though there are multiple data types reported, they have created a consistent interface and color palette throughout.
The Texas A&M team has strived to create a website that serves the colleges, the administration and the general public, and in this session they’ll tell you how they did it, and what they learned in the process.

Tableau PresentationIndustry:Software & TechnologyWrapping Tableau with an Analytics Process at SoundBite CommunicationsWrapping Tableau with an Analytics Process at SoundBite Communications
Tableau is an awesome tool, but how does it fit into an organization's business process? With EVERYONE so busy, how can Tableau seamlessly fit into their schedules, provide value, but with minimal intrusion? How do different audiences consume information from Tableau differently, and what is the best way to engage them (email, web, mobile)? On top of ALL that, how can we ensure that what we deliver with Tableau has BUSINESS value, and follows a robust analytics process that is repeatable and influences change? These are the themes of my talk.
I will review how these questions were answer both internal to SoundBite, and with out clients. Specifically, this approach, with Tableau as the vehicle, changed the way SoundBite and our clients consumed information (or prior to Tableau, the LACK of information). It sped and facilitated the consolidation, distribution, consumption of actionable results.
This talk will be useful to attendees as it will provide practical examples of how the power of Tableau can be harnessed effectively when employed with the correct business and analytics processes.

In visualization, we map data values and relationships onto visual dimensions to create a visual representation. But, how well does that visualization represent the features and structures in the data? How well does it highlight aspects of the data that will help the analyst make good decisions? How well is it matched to the task?
Using examples from financial risk analysis, cardiac modeling, and data mining, I will demonstrate how insights from research in color perception, perceptual organization and visual attention can help guide your visualization choices. We’ll explore why some color scales are better than others at representing magnitude information, why different color combinations can either mask or highlight structures in the data, and how visual cues can draw attention to corresponding regions in linked representations, allowing the analyst discover features in complex high-dimensional data.
The goal of this talk is to provide a few perceptual and cognitive building blocks that can inform a wide variety of visualization choices.

Community AlleyDiscovery Channel Uses Tableau to Improve Global Broadcast ReliabilityDiscovery Channel Uses Tableau to Improve Global Broadcast Reliability
Discovery Communications operates 164 television networks in 218 countries and territories. Broadcast reliability is a Key Performance Indicator, measuring the proportion of time that broadcast signals are unaffected by on-air technical discrepancies.
In 2010, Discovery’s London Media Centre (LMC), was lagging behind its regional peers. Due to technical and operational challenges, customers would sometimes receive programs with incorrect languages or content, or with absent/incorrect on-air branding and marketing graphics. These technical issues placed viewer engagement at risk and jeopardized the efforts of media planning and channel marketing strategies. The operations and engineering teams were overwhelmed by the quantity and variety of discrepancies, and struggled to understand the drivers of these issues and to prioritize improvement efforts. Broadcast reliability reports were produced manually with Excel extracts, and managers had little visibility into performance patterns and root causes of outages and other technical deficiencies.
New broadcast reliability reporting was designed in Tableau, providing a clear view of weekly performance against improvement targets, and a series of ad hoc analyses was performed in Tableau to test hypotheses and identify correlations between time-of-day, channel, and performance.
Tableau Server was implemented at Discovery in 2012 and broadcast reliability dashboards have been a cornerstone among a wide variety of performance management views for all levels of management. Server has increased availability of performance information and reduced the effort required for reporting and analysis.
Broadcast reliability at the LMC increased between 2010 and 2011, representing a 67% reduction in discrepancy duration per channel. Reliability improved again in 2012 with a 61% improvement; and has continued to improve in 2013.

Tableau PresentationHow Tableau Makes Being a Little Dangerous Extremely DangerousHow Tableau Makes Being a Little Dangerous Extremely Dangerous
If a little bit of knowledge is dangerous, what does a whole lot of knowledge make you? Tableau has helped RadiumOne, a digital advertising platform, become nearly omniscient in its day-to-day revenue operations and has changed the way the firm uses its data to serve its clients.
In this session, attendees will hear the journey of developing a Tableau platform and what it means to have a tool that fills a critical, but previously unbridgeable, gap between spreadsheets and high cost data analysis. For RadiumOne, the gap has meant the difference between useless noise and real information.
Attendees not yet using Tableau Server and thinking about the benefits, those thinking about using Tableau for near real-time operational usage, and any business people wondering if they, too, can build a BI platform are encouraged to attend.

As a leader in the hardware support and maintenance business, the challenge for SMS has always been tracking the moving parts. SMS provides service to clients in virtually all 50 states, and Canada, and has a growing presence in Mainland China, Hong Kong and other Asian Markets.
With boots on the ground maintaining over one and a half million assets worldwide, on an average week SMS resolves thousands of cases, most of which require on-site visits. To ensure profitability SMS must be able to track all the costs associated with a hardware incident. Tableau in the FieldUsing Tableau for Agency/Client Integration at Empower MediaMarketingUsing Tableau for Agency/Client Integration at Empower MediaMarketing
This session will show how Tableau helped a leading independent agency integrate client KPIs with media metrics and restore order to the agency/client relationship.
By promoting frank discussions over business rules, implementing a Tableau dashboard insured that both the agency and client were fully vested in the KPIs that were really critical to drive the business forward. This insured that the main areas of focus were maintained and a common version of the ‘truth’ was delivered.
Agencies face unique challenges in that they must not only understand and migrate their way through their own data but also their clients data and data infrastructure. These challenges can be particularly overwhelming when little is known about the client’s data and relationships are not yet well established between the client and agency.
In this session, you’ll hear how one leading independent advertising agency partnered with a new key client to make data and the insights derived from it an integral part to its promise of: “Start Smart, Get Smarter!”

Hands-on TrainingAnalytics in Institutional Research: The Final FrontierAnalytics in Institutional Research: The Final Frontier
The University at Buffalo emphasized data-driven decision making as the hallmark for the policy process moving forward into the new millennia. Concomitant with this desire will be the challenge to convert UB’s ever-growing data stores into actionable information products. At the vanguard of this effort is the Office of Institutional Analysis (OIA). In particular, OIA’s mission to provide primary analytic support for the Provost and senior leadership demands the office be equipped with modern analytical tools to respond appropriately to university need.
Historically OIA has relied on Microsoft tools to conduct its operations. Technologies such as Oracle’s Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) and Blackboard’s iStrategy power UB's operational reporting and while OIA leverages these tools, especially their data modeling capacity, they lack the ability to easily support the modern visualization efforts necessary for today's strategic policy discussions.

Tableau PresentationDesigning Visually Inspiring Dashboards at ExxonMobilDesigning Visually Inspiring Dashboards at ExxonMobil
This session will feature demos on how to take advantage of Tableau’s built-in features to spruce up the look and feel of dashboards, and share some resources available on-line to help you achieve your objectives. It will present simple yet effective design tips that can help communicate the message behind your visualizations, using best practices developed at ExxonMobil.
The message you wish to share with your visualization is better understood if you use the right colors, font-face, positioning and graphics. While developing dashboards, many tend to spend more time on content and mechanics, and very little time when it comes to aesthetics.
By not applying design considerations, you run the risk of not telling the story that’s important to your audience, and this could impact adoption of the tool. By following the simple tips presented in this session, you can be even more successful when presenting and sharing your visualizations.
