San Diego Fire Department Calls Analysis

The city of San Diego, my home, recently opened up a lot of their data here: SD Open Data Portal

Being the data geek and curious citizen I am I was wondering about the San Diego Fire Department information. So after a few clicks around on the data portal, I found what I was looking for. I'm not sure if I found any great insight here, but I was surprised to learn that only ~4% of calls SDFD respond to are for actual fires?

Is there something you see here that I don't? Let me know in the comments below…

  1. My first thought is that population density clearly matters a lot here. I wonder what the variation looks like when you use calls per capita.

  2. Some interesting questions from a Contact Center / call arrival perspective are:
    1) Time of Day grouping by hour / half hour and weekend vs. weekday
    2) What areas with the same population density have greater or lesser call ratios?
Thanks for sharing as I think this great to hear about transparency in data.
